Notice...

The purpose of this blog is to have a little fun. It is NOT to start arguments. I don't profess to be an expert on Sci-fi, nor do I aspire to become an expert. You are welcome to comment on any and all content you find here. If my opinion differs from yours, as far as I am concerned, it's all okay. I will never say that you are wrong because you disagree with me, and I expect the same from those that comment here. Also, my audience on the blog will include some young people. Please govern your language when posting comments.

Posts will hopefully be regular based on the movies I see, the television shows I watch, and the books I read as well as what ever strikes me as noteworthy.

About Me

Greetings everyone, and welcome to my blog...

So, who is Jim Arrowood?

Well, I'm not anyone special, really. I am just your average person who happens to be a Science Fiction fan that enjoys mostly space opera.

So why the blog?

That answer to that one is simple - while I was working on my masters degree, taking the majority of the classes on line, I was required to do a lot of writing. When I finished the degree, believe it or not, I missed the writing.

Anyway, the purpose for the blog was to write about Sci-fi stuff that I had opinions on and such. It has pretty much turned into a book review blog.

Here's the about me part...

I was born in San Francisco in 1957. There were two things that my dad enjoyed and exposed me to at a very young age; television westerns and NASA rocket launches. He also enjoyed Sci-fi in the form of movies on television, and the occasional television show. Mostly what I remember is Twilight Zone and black & white movies. As I grew, I discovered Star Trek and have been a lifelong Trekkie/Trekker. Since then, I have tried to see everything I can.

I got into reading early, thanks to my mom, who would read to my brothers and I on a nightly basis. My dad never encouraged reading though, so thank you mom.

Currently, I am married to Diane, my wife now since 2003, and we have a daughter, Chrissy who is attending college classes and working at a local market. As I do, Chrissy enjoys an interest in Science Fiction, and real science. We reside in Kearney, Nebraska. I also have two other grown up offspring, Jamie and Benjamin from a previous marriage.

I've retired from my day job as the K-12 Vocal/Instrumental Music Instructor at Kenesaw Public School, where I taught for 24 years. I am currently learning how to be retired. It has been difficult figuring out I don't have to be busy all the time.

I earn a little extra cash by substitute teaching in the Kearney Public School system.

In my spare time, I enjoy watching Sci-fi movies and television and reading books. Along with Jim's SciFi Blog, I enjoy podcasting. Currently, I am a host on the Honorverse Today podcast in which I discuss David Weber's Honor Harrington books once a month with two friends. Other podcasts I have been involved with include The Dune Saga Podcast, The Orbital Sword podcast, and The Babylon Project Podcast. I also enjoy playing board games, especially Star Trek Catan, and Star Trek Scene It, and Terraforming Mars, along with many others.

I am also involved in the Central Nebraska Writers Group (CNWG). It is not a critique group as much as it is an encouragement group for aspiring and published authors. We are also not limited to Central Nebraska anymore. Since COVID, we have members from Texas and the West Coast of the U.S.

I've been told it is important to remain physically and intellectually active in retirement. On the physical side, I enjoy cycling every day I can. Lately, I've been riding between 15 and 20 miles a day on Kearney's excellent bike trails. Intellectually, after many years of threatening, I've started learning to really play the guitar beyond knowing three chords.

I am quite active on Facebook. I have very few friends with the same interests as me localIy, so I enjoy interaction with my social media friends.

If you are a Scifi fan and would like to friend me, or follow me, or whatever feel free on...

I do not, as a rule, discuss work, politics, philosophical points of view, or my personal opinions in public forums. I try to keep it positive and upbeat; the world is depressing enough without me adding my own whining to it. I think I am pretty easy to get along with.

Well, there it is...

Qapla!

  1. Hi Jim

May I begin by saying I am a debut Sci Fi Author www.markdowsonauthor.com who is launching my first book with digital ARC ready in a week's time for endorsers to review and official launch date to be at the beginning of October 2019. I have written a trilogy and a 4th part half way through writing. Therefore, I can say I have plans to have 5 parts in the series. Please review my website. I live in the UK and have an American Publisher - Koehler books who has helped me with my final editing, publishing and soon to be distribution of the book to Barnes & Noble, alike and Amazon alike. I could really do with your help in advertising my debut book and the trilogy on your websites and blogging on other related websites for me. Is this something you can do for me? I an excited about the opportunity of being one of your new featured Sci Fi authors you help blog in the industry. I look forward to hearing from you. Kindest regards Mark 0044 07947864976

  5. Hi Jim
Nice to read about you, I was looking at getting a review for my first Space Opera book and came across your site. Must admit I got a bit distracted reading some of the reviews and your life information is a parallel to mine in many ways except you are a young fella, born in 57 whereas I was born in 55. Anyway, mate I am looking to get a couple of reviews to see if I am on the right track. My book is a Space Opera with a basis on the Digital Twins concept that has been in the news lately. If you are too busy I appreciate that, but thanks for doing all the blogging and info sharing.
    cheers

    2. Hello Jim. I'm an indie author who writes engineering stuff. Having written six such genre books, I decided to write a sci-fi romance novel for a change.

I've recently published my book on Amazon, and having chanced upon your blog, thought I'd drop you a note. If you have Kindle unlimited, you may read it for free, or you can visit my blog to take a look:

You have a great blog with interesting reviews. That's expected for a prolific writer like yourself. Cheers!

  7. Hey Jim. I found you on the Facebook Science Fiction Enthusiast group. I've recently published a dystopian science fiction thriller, Autumn's End. I know you are a space opera fan but you seem to be quite interested in Artificial Intelligence as well which is a big part of my story's plot. Would you be interested in reading a copy? If you are, you can download it here: https://dl.bookfunnel.com/ewdbdi0h56 . Looking forward to hearing from you.
